Race Date: 6/5/10

Race Placement/Time/Qualification: 1st OA

Tell us about your race (limit 500 words)…: I decided to do this race about 5 days out. I did the half last year and did well, but I had no desire to race a half this year (nor had I done the long bikes necessary to race one) especially in the humidity I was predicting. Not even a cash purse was motivation enough to suffer through that run.

Had a lot of fun racing the Junior Elite crowd that was there. Those juniors who are still swimming full-time can still sprint a 500 no problem whereas my 500 speed is my everything else speed. After I was done contemplating the immortality of the crab (that means daydreaming) in T1 I had quite a few people to catch. I was regretting not having my race wheels at points (used my power tap wheel for an FTP test but batteries were dead so there wasn’t even a reason to be riding my training wheels). After passing and then being passed by Luke Farkas we came into T2 together and stayed together until the run turn around where it was mostly downhill from there. I ran a 5:26 mile on the way back to pull away for the win. My feet were getting so hot I felt like I had burned them the day after the race.

Back when I was 16 I was swimming full time (swam a 15:39 1,650 at 16). I wonder what kind of triathlete I’d be today if I had the run and bike training that these juniors have now. It will be interesting to see where the dominant triathletes come from in the future. . . athletes who started triathlon training at a young age, or rather the best single sport post-collegiate athletes (where it seems most of our current pros came from).

Congrats to my athletes Emily Bridges for getting 3rd AG in her first sprint, and Matt Schaefer (who I’ve only been coaching a week so I can take no credit) for 1st AG and 4th OA. He beat me to the T1 touch pad, so I’d better watch myself in the water.

Thanks to Danny for the picture. Also, the singlet is really nice… I’ll be racing in it from here on out. You wouldn’t think the lack of a drawstring would make a big difference, but the lack of pressure around the waistline is awesome.

Great job, Sam! I’m glad you clinched the win despite those ridiculously, freakishly fast juniors on the hunt!

Now aren’t you glad you didn’t loan me your aerohelmet?!

Danny will be happy with the photo credit. He says he’s been getting screwed in that department for years! ;) Thank YOU for getting such great photos of all of us after your race.

Best of luck the rest of the season.
